What is Personal Branding in 2019?

In the new work environment, where entrepreneurialism is highly-valued, whether you run your own business, work in a start-up or for a global corporation, personal branding is key in helping you to stand-out for the right reasons. Personal branding is no longer subject only to world business leaders, politicians and celebrities, due to social media and the central use of LinkedIN, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Tinder and YouTube in our professional, business, social and personal lives, everyone now has a personal brand.

What is Personal Branding?



If you take iconic brands like Apple, Red Bull or Chanel, they very clearly and succinctly communicate a certain message, through their individual personality-like traits. These ‘trait’s are their brand values. Great branding humanises a product, making it something it’s target market can relate to, want to associate with, aspire to and ultimately loyally consume. More recently, it goes much further and creates it’s very own tribe of followers, take Apple for instance. Dedicated Apple-followers, as an example, even gain an identity from the brand.

Clarity on yours or a product’s core values are key to great branding and central to our coaching approach. When we take a brand like Coca Cola, we think wholesome, all-American, good-times, sharing with our loved ones, family values, as a result it feels warm and loving. These are Coca Cola’s values. It’s sugar-water at the end of the day, so what an awesome job in creating a brand that has permeated the hearts and minds of people for generations. That’s the power a great brand can have, the success is simply in the clarity and military-like precision and consistency of the communication of it’s values.

Great personal branding is really very simple, it’s about clarity of your values, your offering and you career objectives and 100% consistency in the communication of those.

What are the benefits of Personal Branding?

Very simply, serious career-advancement. The clearer your brand is, the clearer others are on who you are, what you can do and where you fit. The greatest result is you fully maximise opportunities and your network, as those around you find it easy to place you, fit you, introduce you, think of you, connect to you, as opportunities arise.

What’s involved in Personal Branding?


Personal branding is what you want the world to see and believe about you and anything and everything used to communicate that. It can be everything from how you communicate and present in person, online, at work day-to-day, how and where you network, how you present through your LinkedIN profile, your Twitter, your blog, what clubs, groups, gym you’re joined, the sports you play to how you look, the photos you choose to post online, articles you write, the clothes you wear, your hairstyle, talks you give at conferences.

Everything you do, amounts to, affirms and creates an impression other’s have of you. Sometimes, the existing brand we have isn’t working for us and we need to consciously change it. All of this is relative to your career objectives, the industry and sector you’re in, the level you’re at and where you’re headed, how you are seen and how you want to be seen.
