The ‘Ghost’ of Interviews Past: Six Steps on How to Recover from being Ghosted

How to overcome ‘Ghosting’ after interviewing! “Ghosting” has been a trend among those using social media and dating apps. For those unaware “ghosting” is when a person unexpectedly stops all communication in hopes that the other party simple “gets the hint” and stops reaching out to them. What is disturbing is that we’re seeing this happen more and more from potential employers over the past few years. It’s incredibly irresponsible; candidates invest hours of time and energy into presentations, resumes, and practicing interviewing only to never hear from the job poster again. These ‘interview casualties’ are then left confused and hurt and assume it was something they must have done to ‘turn the employer off’. While this may be true, it could just be a flaky employer.  […]

The one thing all successful people have in common!

Recently, I’ve been on a drive to develop our team in new and exciting ways, as well as, checking in with our existing SEVEN Coaches and through many fantastic conversations, I couldn’t help but notice one very clear commonality we all have, having our own individual A-Team to support us, help us, teach us and to learn from. Speaking with Eden Abrahams, our New York Associate, her description of her ideal client is ‘someone who gets that they need help to accomplish things’. And I whole-heartedly agree. Having a personal trainer,  a business or work mentor, a therapist, a creativity or development coach, a support group, a writing group, an energy healer, a masseuse is all common place these days. It’s not just something for the elite or the rich and famous or indeed a Hollywood film. We live in such an amazing time, where there is literally a group or a professional out there to help you or facilitate pretty much anything you can imagine! What I come across quite commonly in my work with career and executive coaching clients, is a reticence to not just look for help, but to accept help. […]

7 Days of Power Questions to get your 2016 really moving!

The right question, at the right time, can move mountains! Coaching is all about questioning and a great Coach understands the power of a perfectly-timed question designed to challenge current thought and help you to move your mind forward. Reducing our often ill-fated New Year’s resolutions down to small, actionable goals is the only way to create real change, which got me thinking about how using one of these ‘power questions’ every day for a week on whatever area you want; career, business, relationships, productivity, creativity, confidence, dating, health etc. can certainly help you identify ways to ensure your 2016 is starting off with an appropriate bang! […]

7 Lessons we can learn from David Bowie

It’s rare that a person dies and has such an impact on millions and millions of people across the globe. The reaction to David Bowie’s death yesterday, was just one of those times, and his impact on generations and generations of people spanning the world over, could be felt in every office, on every radio station, in every cafe and shop playing his music, every newspaper this morning. I overheard strangers on the street comiserating! […]

In The Telegraph – SEVEN Career Coaching

See SEVEN’s Evelyn Cotter featured in The Telegraph’s piece on ‘How to recover from a big mistake at work’. “Last week, John McDonnell made a big mistake at work. After opening with a reasoned criticism of George Osborne’s Autumn Statement, the shadow chancellor undermined his argument by pulling Chairman Mao’s ‘Little Red Book’ out of his jacket and using the writings of the communist revolutionary to jokily drive his point home. Perhaps predictably, the stunt backfired. The Conservatives laughed harder than members of the shadow chancellor’s own party, and McDonnell’s initial argument was lost in the inevitable storm that resulted from a top tier British politician quoting one of the most notorious Communist dictators in history.  […]

SEVEN contributes to Discovery Channel Report

We are very excited to have been a part of the new report by the Discovery Channel, called The Age of Curiosity. Evelyn discussed how curiosity plays a role in careers and career change and is making it more acceptable and common now. Evelyn also talked about how portfolio careers are becoming more much more attractive and due to technology, curiosity is playing a central role to people wanting to explore what else is out there for them and evolving as their stage of life evolves. Very exciting stuff and some real gems in this study by other experts. Over 2,000 participants took part and Evelyn was one of 5 global experts. […]

London School of Business – 55% want to change career!

Our friends over at the London School of Business & Finance sent us the results of their latest study last week and frankly, we weren’t surprised. With 47% of employed people within the UK wanting a career change and a whopping 55% of Londoners wanting to change career, the stats confirm what we hear every day, many people are in ill-fitting professions, uncomfortable work environments and dissatisfied with their working lives. 66% of millennials, people in their ’20s and ’30s, aren’t currently satisfied and want to change career, that’s two thirds, staggering!  According to The London School of Business & Finance, many people realise they want change, the majority (25%) in the next 12 months, but are often afraid to leave and aren’t sure how to take the steps to make change a better reality. Here are some tips if you are considering a career change: […]

Look a little differently to attract & recruit brighter, better talent.

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a fantastically dynamic team at the world’s leading creative customer collaboration consultancy C Space on the Southbank in London and help them with a recruitment challenge. Any recruitment challenge is a business challenge, make no bones about it. Talent are the life blood of growing companies and so often, how companies recruit is so easily overlooked. Great talent means great business, so investing in the process, is investing in the business. It seems obvious, but not in practise. More apt and costly for small to medium growing businesses, where mistakes really cost, the pressure’s on to get it right first time! Here’s how C Space did it. The Challenge at C Space: Replacing a pivotal top performing team member in the growing business development team, with zero room for error allowed. The objective: To attract the highest calibre candidates (in the top 1%, based on C Space’s agreed competencies and traits) and select the best fit. The problem: Their current recruitment process was not attracting the right types of candidates. The real problem: […]
